Tonsils are lymph nodes in the back of your throat that help fight infection. They trap germs that enter through your mouth and nose.

Location

Palatine tonsils:Located on either side of the back of your throat

Pharyngeal tonsils: Located in the center of where the nasal cavity meets the throat

Lingual tonsils: Located at the back of the tongue

Tubal tonsils: Located on either side of where the nasal cavity meets the throat Tonsil issues

Tonsillitis?

An infection of the tonsils that can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Symptoms include red, swollen, or infected tonsils.

Enlarged tonsils

Can make it hard to breathe through your nose, or cause difficulty while sleeping.

Treatment

Most cases of viral tonsillitis clear up in a few days with fluids and rest.

Bacterial tonsillitis is typically treated with antibiotics.

If your tonsils are chronically infected or don't get better, your healthcare provider might recommend a tonsillectomy.

Prevention

Practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently and avoiding sharing food and utensils.
